New Article: Gaining Muscle, Losing Bodyfat, and Rowing Training
Aligning strength training and rowing training for gaining muscle and/or losing bodyfat
Reminder: There’s still time to register for “The Conference for Rowing Coaches,” happening next weekend December 8-10 in Saratoga Springs, NY. I’m presenting twice on Saturday, alongside many other great speakers and topics. I hope to see you there!
Today’s new article…
It’s hard to gain muscle, lose bodyfat, and improve rowing and erging performance all at once. Just two out of three of those goals is hard enough, and most rowers are best served to just focus on one for 2-3 months while maintaining the others. This has been a common question for years in my inbox and at workshops, and I think I’ve finally been able to address it without straying too far from my strength coach lane.
There’s more “framing” in this article than I typically like to include, but I think it’s necessary to clarify that my role as a strength coach is just to discuss alignment of trainable factors rather than details of health and wellness, nutritional specifics, why someone might have this goal or that goal, and so on. I’ve tried to present this as tips for modifying strength training and rowing training to achieve the goals of gaining muscle mass and losing bodyfat, whatever someone’s reasons for and nutritional methods of doing so might be.
I do think that I have some different training methods for the priority or eventual goal of becoming a better rower, versus what you might find on the Internet written by and for non-rowers about gaining muscle or losing bodyfat. This is what I’m trying to communicate in this article, rather than a “Complete Guide” approach including specific nutritional advice that is outside of my scope and usually requires a level of individualization too great for an online resource. I do have some sports nutrition resources linked in the article from people qualified to give advice on that.
